Slow to Speak

Pastor Zubeda Sing · 2 min read

“Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.”
James 1v19

The power of communication. The right kind of communication at the right time can make anything happen. Using the right words at the right time to the right audience could bring tremendous results. The art of communication results in a peaceful marriage, a successful company and provides excellent directions for teams to work in unity. Communication can relay a plan in a way that can convince the most difficult person to participate. I would say communication is a great key to living a successful life.

The above scripture speaks to us of being slow to speak. What it is saying, is be strategic in how you respond in every situation. The person you are speaking to could be setting a trap for you and if you give into your emotions and retaliate, it will be like a dam bursting and nothing will be accomplished. An example of this could be a discussion between a husband and wife. There is a particular issue that needs handling but each one has a different view. The husband will explain or the wife will take the lead in explaining but the tone of the explanation could set the room aflame. Hence we need to be slow to speak but swift to hear. Hearing the matter and understanding the matter gives you time to think and engage the wisdom of God. We need to pursue peach at all costs. So we need to handle each matter with discernment and diplomacy. Listening is your time to get the wisdom of God on a matter. The tone of your voice will settle the most furious person. So slow down, it does not matter if you are not taking the lead in a conversation, but ultimately your patience will pay off. Your soft answer to an angry person will turn away wrath or anger. Your body language in listening is also vital. Sometimes our body language and attitude stirs up the anger of the other person.

So communication includes your body language, your silence and your ability to listen. There is a language of silence too, so engage whatever it takes to communicate effectively. The Holy Spirit will guide you in your communication, but you have to engage him.

The thriver is an effective communicator who listens well and answers softly but effectively.
