Guarding the Heart

Wow! What an indictment. A brood of vipers, this was said by John when he started speaking to the people of Israel. He was preparing the way of the Lord. Once again, he too reiterates the fact that the mouth can only speak what is in the heart. So, the message is, guard your heart and only allow the best of God into your life. Those things which are pure, lovely and of a good report.

The secret to keeping the heart good and pure is to guard your heart. What does it mean to guard your heart. It means to protect, to keep watch over, defend against any enemy of doubt and unbelief, never allowing the word you have heard to escape, guard your words and be very cautious of what you speak. This is the vital part of your growth and maturity in the Lord. Guarding your heart is essential. In the example of a farmer, the farmer protects the soil from weeds and insects that would destroy the soul where the seed has been planted. Likewise, we too, have to guard our hearts and prefect insects and disease to destroy the harvest in our hearts.

When in a conversation with someone who is negative and bad mouthing someone. You have the right to stop the person and say, I do not like what you are saying and stop the conversation immediately. A person using abusive language in your presence, you have the right to stop them as this affects the peace in your heart. This is how you practically guard your heart and do not allow the word to be stolen from your heart.

The thriver guards their hearts in all they do, no matter what the cost is.

CONFESSION/PRAYER

Holy Spirit teach me to guard my heart so no weapon fashioned against me can prosper. Guard my heart from the attacks of the enemy who wishes to steal my joy. Let the word be a shield and a butler around my heart.
