Avoiding the Mission

Pastor Zubeda Sing · 2 min read

“Then Moses said to the LORD, “Please, Lord, I am not a man of words (eloquent, fluent), neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant; for I am slow of speech and tongue.”
Exodus 4v10

Moses was given a mandate to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt and into the promised land. God called him because he was the man for the job. He was born to do this and anointed with the grace to lead God’s people. Moses was so intimidated because of the incident that took place before he left, where he killed a man, that he did not feel worthy to take up the job. God did not hold him to account for his mistake. The mission was greater than the mistake. He knew that he would have to be able to speak in order to influence the people of God so he used the excuse of having slow speech and tongue to convince God that he was not the man for the job. God could fix his tongue and his manner of speech, but the mandate and mission had to be completed. Moses ask God to use Aaron instead and we all know how that worked out. Aaron was not able to fulfil the task so when the people asked him to build a golden calf for them, he yielded to the voice of the people. Moses, despite his claim to being unable to speak, never spoke against God or served an idol. His love for God and His people allowed him to overcome his “perceived” disability. Moses was able to intercede with God on behalf of the people.

His tongue became the tool to manifest the mandate and save God’s people from a life of slavery. He may have started out wrong, yet yielding to God brought about a healed tongue and a mandate fulfilled. Give yourself a chance. Do not make an excuse, your tongue has a purpose and when you yield your tongue to God, your purpose will be fulfilled.
