The Consequences of Failure to Honour

“Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying, Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.”
Jesus speaking to those who came to him, reminded them to honour their father and mother and the consequences of failing to do so. Why would Jesus even bring this up, he was coming in to bring in the dispensation of grace. He was reminding us that there are certain principles that will never fall away. He came to fulfill the law. One of the fulfillments was honouring of parents. The new fads of fashion and thinking should not affect how we treat our parents. They may be wrong in certain ways, they may be failures or addicts, still we should find a way to honour them by the spirit of God. In this principle of honour I want to include the elders in your life. Those people who are older than you, show respect and honour, it will take you a long way in this life. Younger siblings honour your older siblings and show respect. Sibling rivalry is not something you should practice in this God life if it comes to tempt you, flee the other way.
This must be an important principle if it occurs more than once in the bible, ponder on it and give it place in your life.
