The Higher Life

“From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy. I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah. For thou, O God, hast heard my vows: thou hast given me the heritage of those that fear thy name.”
David called out to God, saying, lead me to the rock that is higher than I. David was very successful in his present life, however there was nothing more rewarding than the presence of God in his life. In all of his successes and victories, his life was empty if God’s presence did not go before him. He realized that it was only through God that he had victory in his life. Victory and success in his own strength was a lower form of life, yet when God would lead him, his victory was satisfying and sustainable. He did not have to go and fight the same fights again.
In this life, we can make a choice to live an ordinary, low life. A low life, just means a life where we depend on ourselves and our own skills to achieve things in our lives. We can do our job well, we can buy our houses and cars because we have money to do so and we feel we are successful, yet we are not satisfied and are always seeking for more. When we lean on and trust in God, He leads us to a higher life and the victory and successes we experience are far more satisfying and sustainable. Actually, this is where the scripture “the blessing of the Lord makes rich and adds no sorrow” Prov 10v22 makes absolute sense. When we strive in our own strength we are always striving and never being fulfilled. Even when we get what we desired, there is an emptiness. When we commit our way to the Lord and He gives us the desires of our heart, there is a contentment that comes that cannot be explained. There is a joy that is unexplainable. That is the higher life in Christ.
Hunger and thirst after this higher life. This life brings Godly contentment.
