Help Me Out of My Detour

Pastor Wesley & Yajhna Sing · 2 min read

“When Abram heard that his nephew [Lot] had been captured, he armed and led out his trained men, born in his own house, [numbering] three hundred and eighteen, and went in pursuit as far [north] as Dan. He divided his forces against them by night, he and his servants, and attacked and defeated them, and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is north of Damascus. And he brought back all the goods, and also brought back his nephew Lot and his possessions, and also the women, and the people.”
Genesis 14v14

The background to this story was, Abraham and Lot his nephew could not stay in the same land as their goods and cattle had increased to the point where the land could not sustain them. Abraham gave Lot the first choice to decide which area he would choose. Lot did not have the wisdom of Abraham, nor did he ask Abraham for advice. He looked in the direction he liked and he chose it with the thought that it was a good land. This was the land of Sodom and Gomorrah. It looked great at the time but it lured Lot and his family into a lustful and prideful life.

They were invaded and taken captive and Abraham had to come to the rescue. Abraham did this willingly with his men, they defeated the enemies and brought back Lot. Lot’s decision did not help him in any way. He never sought the counsel of Abraham who had left his home with a word of prophecy from the Father. Lot assumed that he would prosper despite Abraham, but the promise came with Abraham, so the blessing was with Abraham. This detour in Lot’s life cost him dearly. (If you have the time, read the rest of the story in Genesis). Abraham helped him from the detour but there was a price to pay.
