Playlist: Tuesday Morning Prayer Meeting
Sermon outline
Believers were not created only to be saved but to grow into the likeness of Christ, which means dying to self, abiding in the vine and measuring maturity by fruit rather than activity, for a lifetime.
Main text
- Ephesians 4:14-15
Opening
She tells everyone to grab a coffee or tea on the cold morning and reads the Faith Chronicle, "A Person of Influence", from 3 John 11-12 and the commendation of Demetrius. She takes the word influencer back from social media: you are an original and your own brand, and the anointing, not striving, is what influences people. After the confession and worship she prays, "We don't just want information, we want transformation," and gives the theme verse, Ephesians 4:15.
Be a person of influence
Many people spend their lives trying to become someone else because of how that person acts. You do not have to be like anyone else; you have your own talents and gifts for the world God has called you to. Let the word dwell in you richly and you will have a word in season for everyone you meet, and people will take your advice because you are authentic, not saying only what they want to hear, and your promises can be counted on.
“They are an original, and you are an original, and you are your own brand.”
- 3 John 11-12
One: you were designed for growth
From creation God designed living things to grow, and His blessing to be fruitful and multiply covers purpose, character and relationship with Him. Seeds become trees, babies become adults, and disciples become more like Christ. The tension is that many Christians get saved, attend church and then plateau. You were not created only to be saved, but to be transformed and to transform those around you.
“What God plants, He expects to flourish.”
- Genesis 1:28
Two: God calls you to grow up
Paul urges the church not to stay infants tossed about by every new teaching, but to grow up into Christ. The goal of the Christian life is Christlikeness, and that is not the same as comfort. Growth is not optional; it is the evidence of life, and where there is none, something is dead or unhealthy.
“Your comfort zone is a cage, so we need to break out and grow up into our destiny.”
- Ephesians 4:14-15
- 2 Peter 3:18
- Colossians 2:6-7
Three: growth requires dying to self
Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone. The world sees growth as adding, but in the kingdom it often starts with subtracting: surrendering pride, ego, comfort, sin and self-sufficiency. Spiritual growth means dying to the flesh, emotional growth means letting go of unforgiveness and bitterness, and relational growth means humility and repentance. A buried seed's hidden season is not wasted; it is where the roots grow.
“What needs to die in me so Christ can grow in me?”
- John 12:24
Four: growth is rooted in relationship
Jesus is the vine and we are the branches. We do not grow by trying harder but by abiding deeper; the branch bears fruit by staying connected, not by striving. Without abiding we become dry, anxious and performative. You can know the logos, the words of the Bible, and still have no rhema working in your life, and without it there is no transformation. Prayer, word, worship and solitude are not tasks that earn growth but invitations to remain.
“We don't grow by trying harder. We can grow when we are abiding deeper.”
- John 15:5
- Psalm 1:3
Five: growth is measured by fruit, not activity
In church we measure maturity by attendance, ministry titles, how many scriptures we can quote or how long we can pray. Jesus measures by fruit that is relational and reflects His nature. Am I more patient than I used to be? Am I more loving to difficult people? Am I more forgiving to those who hurt me? Is my joy anchored in the storm? By their fruit you will know them.
Illustration: Picture a big apple tree in season and look to see whether the apples are actually hanging on the branches.
“Am I more patient than I used to be? Am I more loving to difficult people? Am I more forgiving to those that have hurt me? Is joy anchored even in my storms?”
- Galatians 5:22-23
- Matthew 7:20
Six: growth is ongoing and lifelong
He who began a good work will carry it on to completion, so you never graduate from growing. It is a marathon, not a sprint: God is not after a flash of fire but a sustained flame, so stop living on fumes. Ask God where He wants you to grow this season, commit to a rhythm of word, prayer and community, and help others through what you have come through. Be patient with yourself, but never settle, because settling becomes comfortable.
“God is not after a flash of fire or short burst of flames. He wants a sustained, long-lasting, consistent flame.”
- Philippians 1:6
Seven: let God finish what He started
We are not growing into a better version of ourselves but into the image of Christ, to which we were predestined to be conformed. The world needs not more religious people but more people who reflect Jesus. There is no resurrection without crucifixion; you cannot step into a new life dragging old baggage. God cannot fill a vessel full of itself, and your next level is locked behind your last surrender.
“Pride must die if purpose is going to live.”
- Romans 8:29
Putting it into practice
- Ask yourself: what needs to die in me so Christ can grow in me?
- Abide rather than strive: make prayer, word, worship and solitude a place to remain
- Measure your growth by patience, love, forgiveness and joy, not activity
- Commit to a rhythm of word, prayer and community, and help someone else grow
- Be patient with yourself, but never settle
Closing
After the prayer points she thanks God for growth, for fruitful character and for revival in the church, asking that it grow in maturity and not just numbers, raising disciples and not just attendees. She leads declarations of being rooted in Christ, led by the Spirit and bearing the fruit of the Spirit, and prays that the church would be soul winners and disciple makers in the marketplace.
Declarations to say aloud
- Holy Spirit, make me an influencer, an anointed, faithful, word-based influencer who can help and change the lives of those you bring into my life. Holy Spirit, fill us with your power, so people are touched and healed by this influence.
- Thank You, O God, that we are rooted in Christ, and You are growing me daily in grace and truth. The Word of God is alive in each and every one of us, renewing our minds and transforming our lives and those around us. Thank You, Lord, that we are led by Your Holy Spirit, and we walk in obedience to Your voice. Thank You, Lord, that we are bearing fruit like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Thank You, Lord, that we will hunger and thirst for righteousness, and that we are being filled in that daily. Thank You, Lord, that we are maturing in our faith and we lack nothing because God is completing the good work that He has started in each and every one of us. Thank You, O God, that as we fix our eyes on You, we press forward with endurance and purpose. Thank You, Lord, that all of our roots go deep, and we are using our faith to grow strong, and my life and your life brings glory to God. Every day we grow in wisdom, stature, and favour with God and people around us. Thank You, O God, that we are created to grow, and nothing will stop God's purpose in our lives.
