See the Potential in Others

“Dear Titus, legitimate son in the faith: Receive everything God our Father and Jesus our Savior give you!”
This short letter from Paul to Titus outlines some of what this Gentile convert accomplished on Paul’s behalf (see v. 5). Titus was a competent member of Paul’s ministry team; in basketball terms, he was the “go to” player, the one who could be counted on to get the job done when time and effectiveness were of the essence. Paul had a mission but he needed others to help him fulfill it. He identified the potential in Titus and thus sent him to the Island of Crete to go and train and develop leaders on his behalf. He could have judged him and thought that Titus was not ready or not competent enough to do the task. Fortunately for Paul he was a leader who was willing to identify the potential in others.
That’s also why Paul entrusted Titus with the responsibility of dealing with a difficult situation that had developed between Paul and the Corinthians (see 7:6,15). He recognized in Titus that he was good at conflict management. He was confident, not only in Titus, but the ability of God at work in Titus to fulfill the task allocated to him.
Men and women of God, leaders in the kingdom, see the potential in others and commit the work in to their hands as well. Together we will accomplish great and wonderful things in the kingdom of God.
