Strive for Godliness and Contentment

“And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. 9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.”
In these scriptures, the Apostle Paul compares godliness and contentment with covetousness and the perils of riches. First, he emphasizes the fact that godliness with contentment is ‘great gain.’ Then He defines contentment as being satisfied with the very basis of having food and clothing “*But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.”*
Paul learned the key of contentment. He told the Philippians, “..*I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therein to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound…” (Philippians 4:11-12). This is the attitude Christians need to have concerning the wealth of this world. We should be content to having our basic needs met, and use anything we receive beyond to build the Kingdom of God
In addition, Paul tells us that those who seek to be rich encounter temptation and other lusts which lead to destruction. Paul said, “For the love of money is the root of all evil…” The evil that Paul pointed out in this verse is covetousness, which is the greedy desire and continual grasping for money that leads men away from their Faith.
