Sermon outline
The Christian life is a spiritual battlefield, and the believer who knows it, puts on the whole armour and fights with prayer, praise and the Word fights from a victory Christ has already won.
Main text
- Ephesians 6:10-13
Opening
The meeting opens with the Faith Chronicle, "The Spirit of the Word", from Acts 19, warning long time believers never to grow so familiar with the Word that a meeting bores them, because it is living and has power. The speaker gives the title, "Life Is a Battle" or "The Battle of Life", prays for open eyes to see the spiritual battles ahead and for hands taught to war, and after praise and worship reads Ephesians 6:10-13 from the Amplified, saying the message may need two parts.
Know the nature of the battle
Everyone knows the week when everything goes wrong at once: sickness, children acting up, a call from the school, arguments, unexpected bills. Life is not just difficult, it is a battlefield, and the day you gave your life to Christ you stepped into a war zone. The enemy is not a colleague, a boss, a child or a spouse but Satan and his kingdom, and he uses lies, comparison, temptation and distraction because he wants you to quit your God-given purpose.
Illustration: A soldier in camp who does not know there is a war on. He wakes up lazy, still in his pyjamas, has not bathed or prepared, and is scrolling Instagram or TikTok. He hears gunfire in the distance and assumes it is his colleagues training or fireworks. While the others crouch and put on the full armour, he strolls in with no weapon and no alertness, and becomes an easy target.
“And he's wounded, not because he was weak, but because he is unaware.”
- Ephesians 6:12
Understand your identity as a soldier
When you gave your life to Jesus you did not just join a family, you enlisted in the army of God. Believers were not saved to sit idle on the sidelines but to stand, fight and advance the kingdom. Many want the benefits of Jesus without the discipline of a soldier: peace without being prepared to fight, comfort without commitment. A soldier is always on duty, alert, trained in mind and focused.
“We want peace, but we are not prepared to fight.”
- 2 Timothy 2:3
Don't get entangled
No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life. Soldiers do not get caught up in the daily drama, gossip or the pursuit of comfort; they live with clarity, purpose and focus on God and His Word. Being constant in prayer, praise and thanksgiving, in trouble and in blessing alike, is what keeps a believer from being easily distracted.
Illustration: The church sang "God Will Work It Out" on the Sunday. The speaker corrects it: God has already worked it out, and won the battle long ago.
“It's not God will work it out. God has already worked it out.”
- 2 Timothy 2:4
Go into the battle equipped to win
God did not call you as a soldier and leave you empty-handed. The arsenal is already behind you: truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, the Word and prayer, worn from head to toe. Meditate on Ephesians 6:10-13 this week until it is part of you. This life is not about surviving; believers are conquerors who take dominion and fight for their faith, family, future and purpose.
“You are not weak or helpless or abandoned. You are called, armed, and backed by heaven.”
- Ephesians 6:10-13
Use the right weapons
The world fights with revenge, control and manipulation, but God gives spiritual weapons: the Word as a sword, faith as a shield, prayer as communion and strategy, truth, righteousness, peace and salvation, and praise. You cannot punch a spirit, silence demonic voices or win the battle in your mind with clever words, or beat temptation on willpower alone. Arguments, offence, gossip, manipulation and fleshly control make spiritual battles worse. Prayer is a first line of attack, not a ritual or a last resort; praise confused the enemy in Jehoshaphat's day; and Jesus answered Satan with "It is written", not with opinions.
Illustration: Imagine a soldier trying to win a war on the battlefield with no weapons. That is what happens when the Word is not read and does not become part of us. Get up every morning and dress your spirit as well as your body.
“You don't win battles by talking about the armor. You win battles by putting them on.”
- 2 Corinthians 10:3-5
- 2 Chronicles 20:22
- Ephesians 6:10-18
- James 5:16
- Hebrews 4:12
Fight the good fight of faith
The fight is won by standing firm in what God has said even when nothing seems to change, with hope, endurance and obedience. The enemy only attacks those he fears, so feeling attacked can mean you are on the right path. Speak God's Word, resist the devil, stay in community with your cell group and the leaders who disciple you, and guard your heart. It is a good fight because it is worth it: for faith, family, the vision God gave, souls and the empty seats in church.
Illustration: The speaker recalls a family situation that showed no improvement for a year or two, while they stayed consistent in faith, praise and thanksgiving whether things were going well or not.
“It's a fight to believe God when everything around us says not to.”
- 1 Timothy 6:12
- 1 John 5:4
Victory is assured in Christ
In all things we are more than conquerors, and greater is He that is in you. Jesus defeated sin, death and sickness on the cross, so believers do not fight for victory but from victory, and simply stand in it and enforce it. Even in the valley of the shadow of death, death has lost its sting.
Illustration: The Rocky Balboa films: watch one a few times and you no longer panic in the fight, because you know who wins in the end. The cross was the last knockout punch.
“You are not just fighting for victory, you are fighting from victory.”
- Romans 8:37
- 1 John 4:4
- Psalm 23:4
Putting it into practice
- Recognise that you are in a spiritual battle and stop blaming people for it
- Put on the full armour every morning, dressing your spirit as deliberately as your body
- Make prayer and praise your first line of attack, not a last resort
- Meditate on Ephesians 6:10-13 through the week and the month
- Stay in community with your cell group and the leaders who disciple you
Closing
After a time of worship the speaker prays over every listener for divine strategy, wisdom and discernment in their battles, for strength not to grow weary, and for grace to put on the full armour daily, then leads faith declarations that every battle will turn into a victory. The meeting closes with encouragement to meditate on the Word through August.
Declarations to say aloud
- Holy Spirit, keep the Word active in me at all times so the Spirit of the Word is revealed to me in every season of my life. The enemy cannot steal the Word from me. Thank you for lifting the blindness of the Word so I can see and understand clearly.
- We are more than conquerors through Christ Jesus.
- Every battle will turn into a victory for God's glory.
- No weapon fashioned or formed against us will prosper. Every tongue that is raised up against us in judgment shall fall in Jesus' name.
- God is fighting for me, and His power guarantees that we are triumphant, that we are conquerors, and that we are victorious in this life.
Worth remembering
