Sermon outline

Truth is who God is and holds the whole armour together, and the righteousness of Christ guards the heart, so put both on daily through the word, honesty, repentance and prayer.

Main text

  • Ephesians 6:10-17

Opening

After a worship leader's opening, the speaker greets those logged in and prays. The Faith Chronicle "Setting the Word as Your Standard" is read from Isaiah 59:19: when the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit lifts up a standard. Joseph's brothers meant to kill him, yet in Potiphar's house and in prison he was being trained to lead a nation, and he told them that what they meant for evil God planned for good. When you hear something you do not agree with, go to the word. The church repeats its confession and goes into worship.

  1. Be strong in the Lord, not in your own ability

Paul tells the Ephesians to draw complete strength from God's power and to put on the full armour daily, because the struggle is against spiritual forces, not flesh and blood. The speaker walks through each piece: truth as the foundation, the breastplate guarding the heart, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith against fiery darts, the helmet guarding the mind, and the sword, the word of God.

“Truth is the foundation of the armor. It holds everything in place.”

    • Ephesians 6:10-17
  2. The belt of truth: truth overrides fact

Truth is absolute, unchanging and eternal; it is not something God has but part of who He is, and Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. Whatever fact the world throws at you, truth overrides it. The belt was what held a soldier's armour together, so truth holds ours in place, countering the enemy's lies so we do not fall under pressure. Buckling it on is an active choice to align mind and heart with God's revelation.

Illustration: A Roman soldier's belt was the foundation that held all the rest of his armour together.

“Whatever fact the world may throw at you, truth will always override anything that is factual.”

    • John 14:6
  3. The breastplate of righteousness

Righteousness is right standing with God, and we cannot achieve it on our own; it is a gift credited to those who believe. Imputed righteousness is Christ's righteousness given through faith; imparted righteousness is what God works in us over time as we dig into the word and seek His face. Wearing it means seeking His righteousness, confessing sin and living obediently, and being a representation of God in the workplace, because for some people you are the only Jesus they will see.

“Let people be able to see Christ through you, through your actions.”

  4. Never face the enemy unarmed

Commit daily to reading the Scriptures, because knowing them is how you know who Jesus is and who you are meant to be. Practise honesty and transparency, cultivate repentance and dependence on Christ, and use prayer to reinforce the armour. Satan checks for the weak spots and knows them all. God provides complete protection, but it is up to us to put it on daily, and prayer empowers every piece.

“Satan checks for the weak spots. He knows all of them. So we must never face him unarmed.”

Putting it into practice

  • Read the Scriptures daily and let the word be the standard when you disagree with something
  • Choose actively each day to align your mind and heart with God's truth
  • Practise honesty and transparency, and keep short accounts through repentance
  • Let people at work see Christ in your actions
  • Ask God in prayer to help you recognise and reject compromising thoughts and behaviour

Closing

The speaker leads the church in declarations on the belt of truth and the breastplate of righteousness, then puts up the prayer points. After worship comes a prayer for God to order their steps in righteousness, to help them choose what is right over what is easy, and to remove bitterness, anger and unforgiveness. The meeting ends with a blessing for a victorious day.

Declarations to say aloud

  • I welcome You, Holy Spirit, today, to come and set the standard in my life by the word of God. You are more than enough for me and are more than able to keep me from falling and present me faultless before the Father. Each day in Your presence, Father, it is Heaven to me.
  • I fasten the belt of truth around my life, and I will not compromise God's Word this morning. The truth of God's Word exposes and destroys every lie of the enemy. I am guided daily by the Spirit of Truth in the right path. My thoughts, my words, and my actions are aligned with God's truth. I stand unshaken because God's truth is my foundation.
  • I put on the breastplate of righteousness, and my heart is guarded from all evil. Christ's righteousness covers me, protecting me from condemnation. My choices today reflect the righteousness of God in me. The breastplate of righteousness keeps my heart pure and my steps firm. I live boldly, knowing I'm clothed in the truth and righteousness of Jesus Christ.

Worth remembering

  • “Whatever fact the world may throw at you, truth will always override anything that is factual.”
  • “Truth is not something God has, but it is part of who He is.”
  • “When we buckle on this belt, it is an active choice to align our minds and our hearts with God's revelation.”
  • “For some people, that is the only Jesus that they will ever see.”
  • “God provides us with complete protection, but it is up to us to make sure that we put on that armor daily.”
