Sermon outline

Your words are a delivery system carrying either God's promises or life's problems into your future, and Caleb, who kept confessing the promise for forty-five years, shows that what you confess you will eventually possess.

Main text

  • 2 Corinthians 4:13
  • Numbers 13:30
  • Joshua 14:6-14

Opening

She thanks Pastor Wes for the opportunity, says she touched on the power of confession at a Tuesday prayer meeting but wants to go further, and prays for utterance. She reads 'we also believe and therefore speak' and Caleb's 'we are well able to overcome it', ties it to the church taking territory with its town campus and the coming Umhlanga campus, and says she is grateful to have been raised in a faith church that put her life on a different trajectory.

  1. Your words are a delivery system

Words are containers carrying faith or fear, hope or despair, life or death. Everything God created began with words, and Jesus said His words are spirit and life. Before there was manifestation there was declaration. The enemy attacks your confession because changing it affects your confidence, your choices and finally your future. Many believers pray for increase, healing and breakthrough and then turn around and confess lack, sickness and defeat.

Illustration: Two identical gift boxes are delivered the same way to the same address. One is light and holds something of value; the other is heavy with stones. One is the promise box and the other the problem box. Every day we deliver packages to our spouse, our children and our future, and we carry them ourselves before anyone else receives them.

“Before there was a manifestation, there was a declaration.”

    • Genesis 1:3
    • John 1:1-3
    • John 6:63
    • Proverbs 18:21
  2. Number one: confession reveals your inner world

The twelve spies saw the same land and brought back fruit as proof, yet ten gave a report of problems and Caleb a report of the promise. The difference was not what they saw but what they believed and confessed. Words do not originate in the eyes but in the heart, and your confession reveals which report you believe.

Illustration: Starting at eighteen as a factory worker unloading trucks on the night shift for a meagre wage, she would walk to the big office window during the night break and declare that one day she would sit there. Nearly twenty years and many promotions later, she looks out of that window into the factory.

“People do not speak what they see. They speak what they believe about what they see.”

    • Numbers 13:31
    • Numbers 13:30
  3. Number two: fear will always magnify the problem

Nobody called the spies grasshoppers; they called themselves that. Fear distorted their identity and turned mountains into monsters. The ten did not lose because of the giants but because they agreed with fear, doubt and unbelief. Your life moves in the direction of your dominant confession, so reflect on what you said yesterday that you are reaping today.

“Whatever voice you agree with becomes the dominant influence in your life.”

    • Numbers 13:33
  4. Number three: God's word is greater than human observation

Caleb was not blind or naive; he saw the giants, the walls and the danger. Faith is not pretending problems do not exist, nor worldly positive affirmation, nor self-confidence or pride. It is believing God's promise is greater than the problem. The question was never whether they could defeat the giants but whether God can fail.

“The question was never can we defeat these giants? The question was rhetorical. Can God fail?”

  5. Number four: your future often hangs on a single confession

Numbers 13 is not just a story about spies; it is a story about words. One confession created a wilderness and another created an inheritance. God told Israel He would do to them exactly what He had heard them say, and an entire generation died having prophesied their own future.

    “Their confession became their destination.”

    • Numbers 14:28
  6. Number five: your words are seeds

A farmer never plants maize and expects apples. You cannot keep sowing doubt, lack and defeat and expect victory, peace and breakthrough. Some are praying for a harvest while sowing the wrong seed.

“Some people are praying for a harvest, but you are sowing the wrong seeds.”

    • Galatians 6:7
  7. Number six: the spirit of faith speaks before it sees

Caleb had no title deed and no visible proof, yet he took ownership of the land. When sickness comes, the natural mind wants a pity party, but faith does not wait for manifestation before declaration. David announced Goliath's defeat before the giant fell.

“Faith does not wait for manifestation before declaration. Faith declares what God has already spoken.”

    • 1 Samuel 17:46
  8. Number seven: the greatest battles are won in your mouth

Before Israel fought Canaan's giants there was a battle of reports. Satan uses offence, discouragement, comparison and delay to get believers to stop speaking God's promises, because when they stop speaking faith they stop expecting, momentum dies, faith weakens, and without faith it is impossible to please God.

“When believers stop speaking faith, they stop expecting.”

    • Hebrews 11:6
  9. Number eight: Caleb kept speaking for forty-five years

Anyone can speak faith for a day, a week or even a year. Caleb kept his confession through forty-five years of wilderness, delay and the funerals of those who complained. Faith is not proven by what you say once but by what you keep saying in the delay and the struggle.

“Faith is proven by what you keep saying in the delay.”

    • Joshua 14:10
  10. Number nine: your confession creates your identity

Caleb had a different spirit. Everyone else identified as grasshoppers and he identified as a conqueror. Identity always precedes destiny, and your confession reinforces whichever identity you believe.

“You will never consistently live beyond the identity you believe about yourself.”

    • Numbers 14:24
  11. Number ten: give me this mountain

At eighty-five Caleb did not ask for comfort, retirement or an easy life; he asked for the mountain. Powerful confessions create powerful people, which is why the enemy attacks them. Against today's financial, family, health and spiritual giants, speak the promise: healed by His stripes, the Lord is my shepherd, I can do all things through Christ, no weapon formed against me shall prosper.

“What he confessed eventually became what he possessed.”

    • Joshua 14:12
    • Psalm 23:1
    • Philippians 4:13
    • Isaiah 54:17

Putting it into practice

  • Notice where you pray one thing and confess the opposite, and change your confession
  • Reflect on what you said yesterday that you are reaping today
  • Stop carrying the 'problem box' of words like unlucky, not good enough and paycheck to paycheck
  • Speak a specific promise of God against each giant you face: health, finances, family or discouragement
  • Keep confessing the promise through the delay, not just once

Closing

She leads the church in five declarations from the screen, choosing the promise box over the problem box, and hands back to Pastor Wesley, who tells the church they shall possess the land, to zip the lip if they have nothing good to say, and closes with a blessing over their generations.

Declarations to say aloud

  • I declare that I will speak God's promises above my problems. I will not allow fear, doubt, or negative circumstances to determine my confession. I will agree with God's word and speak life over every situation.
  • I declare that I'm well able through Christ Jesus. Like Caleb, I choose faith over fear. Every giant before me is smaller than the God who is with me. I am equipped, I am empowered and able to overcome.
  • I declare that my words will produce life and blessings. I will use my tongue to build, encourage, bless, and strengthen. My words will align with God's purpose for my life. In Jesus' name.
  • I declare that I will hold fast to my confession during delays. Even when I cannot see immediate results, I will continue speaking God's promises. I will not let circumstances change my confession.
  • I declare that what God has promised, I will possess. I refuse to carry the problem box. I choose the promise box. Every promise God has spoken over my life will come to pass in his perfect timing. I believed, therefore I spoke.

Worth remembering

  • “Your words are never merely words.”
  • “People do not speak what they see. They speak what they believe about what they see.”
  • “Fear turns mountains into monsters when really that mountain should be yours.”
  • “Your life moves in the direction of your dominant confession.”
  • “Your confession today will become your possession tomorrow.”
