The Mandate of Samson

Pastor Zubeda Sing · 1 min read

“For behold, you shall conceive and give birth to a son. No razor shall come upon his head, for the boy shall be a Nazirite [dedicated] to God from birth; and he shall begin to rescue Israel from the hands of the Philistines.””
Judges 13v5

No doubt about it, Samson was special. Before he had even been conceived, an angel of the Lord had set the stage for this man’s life (see Judges 13:3–5). Samson was a Nazirite, one who was set apart for God’s work. God had selected Samson to lead Israel against the Philistines, and his valiant, single-handed battles with Philistine troops attested to his personal bravery and the presence of God’s blessing on his life. In short, Samson was a national hero.

But Samson’s superhuman strength wasn’t an inherited trait. It was a gift from God. Before he had completed these amazing tasks, the writer of Judges tells us that “the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon him” (14:6,19).

In spite of all Samson had going for him, he had a fatal flaw. We too have a specific mandate and calling and have the power of God fueling our lives, however unless we yield to the Holy Spirit, like Samson we will fail and become a victim to our lusts. We can overcome by the blood of the lamb and the word of our testimony. We have the name of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit to fulfil our calling in this life time.
