Teaching series: Fruitfulness
Sermon outline
A fruitful Christian leaves fruit that outlives them: godly influence begins in the home, grows through character, discipleship and encouragement, and ripples into generations who will benefit from prayers and obedience offered today.
Main text
- Psalm 128:1-6
Opening
She gets the church on its feet to praise, thanks Pastor Wesley and Pastor Yajna, and recaps the month on fruitfulness as an invitation to rest and abide in Christ. Her own title for the message is Building Generations Through Godly Influence, the fruit that outlives you. She pictures a stone thrown into a still river: the ripples go outward, and one prayer or one act of obedience today ripples into the generations to come. She is enjoying the blessing of people who prayed for her in this house.
Godly influence begins in the home
Psalm 128 is God's design for the family: reverence for the Lord and walking in obedience come first, and then the blessing follows and reaches your children's children. The vine bears only while connected to its source, so a home flourishes when Christ is at its centre. Olive trees live for centuries and new shoots grow up around the mature tree, a picture of children growing around godly parents. Samuel's story began not when he was born but with a mother on her knees.
Illustration: A preacher she watched that week asked how many of us have knees that know the church floor while the floors at home don't know our knees.
“Her prayers shaped a prophet. Her obedience influenced a nation.”
- Psalm 128:1-6
- 1 Samuel 1:10-28
Godly character leaves a legacy
The woman of Proverbs 31 describes qualities for every believer, not only women: strength that endures difficult seasons, dignity that comes from an identity rooted in Christ rather than people's validation, wisdom in words that build rather than trample others, and reverence for God. Ruth chose to stay with Naomi, and her humility and loyalty led her to Boaz and into the line of David and of Jesus. Her influence came from character, not position.
Illustration: Where she works, people often talk about each other to get ahead, and she has made a rule never to take part and to walk away. Her mother, she says, speaks honest, direct words that are always meant to build you up.
“Ruth's influence did not come from position. It came from her character.”
- Proverbs 31:25-28
- Ruth 1:16
Every Christian is called to spiritual influence
Paul tells the older women to teach the younger, God's pattern of mature believers discipling younger ones, which is what the church's school of leaders and discipleship vision are about. Faith is passed on intentionally through teaching scripture, encouraging, sharing testimony and modelling faith. Timothy's faith was first planted by his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice before Paul ever taught him. Faith is transferable, but only if we live it in hard seasons too.
Illustration: She owns up to liking Netflix and binge-watching, and asks how often we make time to learn a scripture instead. When you narrowly miss an accident on the freeway, that is a testimony to share at home.
“Someone taught Timothy before Paul ever did.”
- Titus 2:3-5
- 2 Timothy 1:5
Fruitfulness comes from remaining in Christ
Apart from the vine we can do nothing. Remain rooted in Christ daily, receive from Him, because God fills us before we can pour into others, and then reproduce healthy Christians. A branch cut from the tree can look alive for a while, but it eventually dries up.
Illustration: Roses in a vase with fresh water and a sachet of nutrients look lovely for a few days, but they wither because they are no longer connected to their source.
“God fills us before we can pour into others.”
- John 15:5-8
Mentorship and encouragement multiply generations
Even after Saul met Jesus, the believers were afraid of him, but Barnabas saw potential where others saw a past, brought him to the apostles and later travelled with him. Do not keep bringing up other people's past in an argument; be someone's Barnabas. Jesus ministered to crowds but invested deeply in twelve, teaching, correcting, praying and serving with them, and they carried the gospel to the world.
“Barnabas saw potential where others saw a past.”
- Acts 9:26-27
- Mark 3:14
A life of faith leaves a legacy that outlives us
Hebrews 11 celebrates ordinary people who trusted God, many of whom never saw the promise fulfilled, yet their generations benefited from their obedience. Abraham left everything without knowing the destination and became the father of faith. David made many mistakes but remained a man after God's heart through repentance. Perfection is not required; a surrendered heart leaves the legacy.
“Influence is not measured by how many people know your name. It is measured by how many people know Jesus because of your life.”
- Hebrews 11:39-40
- Genesis 12:1
- Genesis 15:5
- Acts 13:22
Putting it into practice
- Pray intentionally over your children and future generations
- Speak blessings, because your words shape identity
- Mentor somebody and walk alongside another believer
- Live consistently, so that your private life matches your public one
- Leave spiritual seeds: an act of obedience today becomes someone else's harvest
Closing
She asks who God is calling them to influence and what spiritual legacy will remain after they are gone, then prays that their homes would be where it all starts and that their faith would be transferable. The host thanks her, announces that she will preach again that evening, and leads a prayer of salvation.
