Emotional Maturity

Pastor Zubeda Sing · 2 min read

“And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.”
Mark 8v32

Peter loved Jesus. He enjoyed fellowship with him and went everywhere Jesus went. He was being trained as a disciple so he was not fully acquainted with the ways of the Lord. He was emotionally immature when it came to the things of the spirit so, here he rebuked Jesus because of what Jesus said. Jesus realized that his response was out of immaturity and a lack of understanding, so he had to correct him in love. The rebuke was in the presence of all the other disciples, and I am sure it was quite embarrassing. Peter learnt and grew from this. He took up his place and on the day of Pentecost, his staying power, caused him to win 3000 souls to the Lord, by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Many Christians, like you and I, suffer from emotional immaturity. We lack in certain areas of our emotions or should I say, we are so accustomed to be led by our emotions that we respond like children many times. A sign of emotional immaturity is an outburst of anger, respond to a matter before hearing the entire story etc. This becomes a problem is you do not grow from this. You can never become the man or woman, God has called you to be, if you do not grow in the Lord. The Holy Spirit teaches you how to control your emotions and slowly you grow to be emotionally mature. What a beautiful place to be.

When you are emotionally mature, you walk in peace and the rest of God. You assess a situation before you respond and you are quite comfortable to speak only when you need to speak. This takes a decision on your part and patience so the Holy Spirit can grow you. Embark on your journey of emotional maturity and together we will be a blessing to the kingdom of God.
