Teaching series: Ten Days of Prayer and Fasting

Sermon outline

When we pray "Thy kingdom come" we establish God's dominion on earth, and it has to be established first in our own hearts, then in our families and then in the church.

Main text

  • Matthew 6:10
  • James 5:16

Opening

He welcomes the church to the fourth night of prayer and fasting and asks them to put away every distraction: phones on do not disturb, laptops closed, no working at the dining room table with the meeting in your hand. He reads Psalm 100 and, after worship, Psalm 103, telling the church the Lord is renewing their strength like the eagle. He points them to the notes in the chat and turns to part three of the Lord's Prayer.

  1. What "Thy kingdom come" means

The kingdom of God is where the King has dominion. When we pray "Thy kingdom come" we are establishing God's dominion on earth as it is in heaven, and God uses us to enact it, as His servants, tools and spears. Each time the church works through the Lord's Prayer in a fast, it learns the basics and does it better, and prayer grows from a few minutes to long periods.

“We're not just citizens of the kingdom, but we enact God's kingdom.”

    • Matthew 6:10
  2. The prayer that avails much

The effectual, fervent, heartfelt prayer of a righteous man avails much, which means it establishes God's dominion here. Unless you are right before God your prayers will not be effective, so there are three conditions: come to the Lord, have a clean heart, and pray according to God's word, His roadmap. The Lord knows what you need before you ask, so begin with thanksgiving rather than badgering yourself with guilt.

“So unless you are right before God, your prayers will not be effective.”

    • James 5:16
    • Matthew 6:8
  3. Number one: establish the kingdom in yourself

Pray for His kingdom in your mind, heart, spirit and daily walk, and for a clean and contrite heart. Pride, arrogance and boasting move us away from the righteousness Christ died for, and we often think we are humble while insisting we are always right. Let the Holy Spirit help you and reveal where you go wrong.

“Because in ourselves, we think we humble, but in actual effect, we're actually very boastful.”

    • Psalm 51:10
  4. Number two: establish the kingdom in your family

Have you prayed for your spouse today, yesterday, this year? Not for dominion over them, nor for better cooking or less sport, but that God would make you the spouse they need. Pray for your children, for the spouses they have not yet met, for sons and daughters in law, and for grandchildren not yet born, that they will not carry their parents' faults and failures. Ask the Lord to reveal His plans for young children, and break what came through the bloodline.

Illustration: "Lord, help him to cut the lawn and change the valves" or "help her to be a better chef" are the simple prayers; the real prayer is "help me to be the man I need to be to lead this family".

“If we have not established the Kingdom of God in our own heart and we haven't established the Kingdom of God in our marriage, how do we train up a child in the way that he should go?”

    • Ephesians 5:25
    • Proverbs 22:6
  5. Pray for the family that will not listen to you

Some relatives will not listen to us because they know us, but God can send other people their way. Pray that their hearts will be open at the right place and time, and send the angels forth into those homes and lives, as the Spirit leads, until He gives you the release to move on.

Illustration: He recalls hearing Kenneth Hagin Sr. teach on praying for family members who will not receive the gospel from you.

“The effective, fervent, heartfelt prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”

    • Hebrews 1:14
  6. Number three: establish the kingdom in your spiritual family

It is not only the pastor's responsibility to pray for the church. Pray for your senior pastor and his wife, the leaders and cell leaders by name, the music team, ushers, children's church, security and every worker. Pray for disciples and disciple makers, and for the harvest, that the Holy Spirit would draw people from the north, south, east and west. Prayer is warfare and covers the house of the Lord.

    “Your prayer is warfare.”

    • Isaiah 43:5-6
    • Matthew 11:12
    • Ephesians 2:2
  7. Be a prayer ninja

All of us should be warriors in prayer. It is not about standing on the rooftops so people see how you pray, but going into the secret place and taking spiritual authority. If everyone faces the same problems, why is the devil overcoming you? Because you have not taken your place and your dominion. Looking at the problem does not change it; changing your thinking changes the situation.

    “A ninja does it himself.”

    • 1 Corinthians 10:13
    • 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Putting it into practice

  • Write down what the Lord shows you while you listen, and pray it when you get up tomorrow
  • Pray for your spouse to be who God wants, and ask God to make you the spouse they need
  • Pray over each child specifically, and over the spouses and grandchildren they do not have yet
  • Pray by name for your pastor, leaders, cell leaders and the workers in every ministry of the church
  • Pray until the Holy Spirit gives you a release before moving to the next part of the prayer

Closing

After the prayer points he prays over every man connected to the church, rebuking complacency and calling them to rise up as sons, husbands and fathers, and then over every woman to take her place in her home and workplace, and prays "Thy kingdom come" over every family. He says the notes are like a whole lamb on a spit and they only got through the leg, and sends the church to begin praying along these lines in the morning.

Declarations to say aloud

  • Thy kingdom come in my marriage, thy kingdom come in my household, thy kingdom come in my life.

Worth remembering

  • “We're not just citizens of the kingdom, but we enact God's kingdom.”
  • “When you look at a problem, it doesn't change. But when you change your thinking, when you look at the problem, the situation changes.”
  • “The problem is not the devil. The problem is you haven't taken your place.”
  • “It's not about standing on the rooftops and letting everybody see how you pray. It's about you going into that secret place of the Most High.”
  • “This is like making a whole lamb on spit, and we only got through the leg.”
