The Mandate of Jeremiah

Pastor Zubeda Sing · 2 min read

“The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, [one] of the priests who were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, to whom the word of the LORD came during the thirteenth year (627 B.C.) of the reign of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah.”
Jeremiah 1v1-12

Now the word of the LORD came to me, saying. This was a standard way of introducing a divine oracle at the beginning of a prophetic book. Jeremiah did not speak out of his own imagination. He spoke as God revealed His word and will.

1:5 Before I formed you in the womb I knew you. Jeremiah was keenly aware that the call of God in his life had been determined by God from before his conception. As God’s word became a reality in his life, the prophet understood that God knew him and had called him to proclaim a critical message at a crucial point in the history of the nation. The word “knew” refers to an intimate knowledge that comes from relationship and personal commitment.

Jeremiah spent nearly five decades urging a rebellious people to repent of their sins without seeing any significant positive response to his messages. In spite of his frequent discouragement and pain, Jeremiah is a model of faithfulness and endurance in the face of extended opposition. Despite the difficulty of the mandate, Jeremiah persisted in the call and tried his best to fulfill the call on his life.

God commissioned Jeremiah to be a prophet to the nations, and in spite of Jeremiah that Jeremiah was restrained and reserved, the Lord assured the prophet that he would be adequate for the task. The Lord not only equipped Jeremiah for this ministry, but he also empowered him to accomplish it. In the same way, God equips each of his adopted children with a singular mix of temperament, education, background, aptitudes and abilities; he couples this mix with a distinctive sphere of influence. In this way, each of us is entrusted with the dignity and responsibility of a unique ministry to others.

Every one of us are called and also equipped by God to fulfill what He has called us to do.

CONFESSION/PRAYER

Father, equip us and keep us consistent in the call to which you have called us. Despite our lack of desire to fulfill the call, out of fear, make us bold and give us the words to speak. We can only do what you have called us to do, because you never leave us nor forsake us.
