The Calling of Matthew

Pastor Zubeda Sing · 1 min read

“As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man named Matthew (Levi) sitting in the tax collector’s booth; and He said to him, “Follow Me [as My disciple, accepting Me as your Master and Teacher and walking the same path of life that I walk].” And Matthew got up and followed Him.”
Matthew 9v9-10

Jesus’ earthly genealogy demonstrates God’s plan to bring about the salvation of humanity. Matthew shows us how, every step along the way, God had protected the bloodline that would bring the Messiah into the world.

Matthew is the first of the five historical books of the New Testament that provide a historical context for the life of Jesus Christ and the beginning of the Christian church. Matthew emphasizes that Jesus is Lord and the perfect fulfillment of many Old Testament Messianic prophecies, and he invites us to respond humbly and obediently to his loving authority.

Jesus called Matthew when he was working as a Tax Collector. He followed Jesus and whatever was asked of him He did. Likewise, we too, are called, we are chosen and we are God’s beloved and to each of us, we have the same instruction, go and make disciples of all men. We have been given the power and authority to do what we have been called to do.
