God’s Glory!

Dr RJ Sing · 1 min read

“And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory. And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy. And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by: And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.”
Ex. 33:18-19, 22-23

The relationship between God and Moses was very intimate. We read that God would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend (see Exodus 33:11). In our passage for today Moses had just returned from Mount Sinai, where he spent forty days and forty nights in communion with God.

He had just received the Ten Commandments. So special was this encounter with God that Moses’ face was radiant. This intimate communion with God changed Moses. He asked God to show him Glory. Yet in spite of the close relationship between them, God refused.

He is so Holy that no one can see Him and live. However, He allowed Moses to see His back, as a sign that He would indeed go with His people. We can also enter into a relationship with God. He still talks to us personally when we read His Word.
