Faith as a Trust (Part 3)

“He only [is] my rock and my salvation; [he is] my defense; I shall not be greatly moved.”
In Psalm 62:2, David states, “He (God) only is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I shall not be greatly shaken” But in verse six, after making exactly the same declaration of trust in God he said, “I shall not be shaken”. Between verse two and verse six, David progressed from not being “greatly shaken” to not be “shaken” at all.
We need to be honest with ourselves as David was. There are times that troubles and opposition will shake us, but they will not overthrow us. However, if we continue to cultivate our trust, we will come to a stage where nothing will be able to shake us, much less overthrow us. Trust of this kind is in the realm of the Spirit rather than the emotions. Mature trust is like a deep, strong river relentlessly making its way to the sea. At times the winds of fear or doubt may blow contrary to the rivers course and cause turbulence on the surface. But these winds cannot change the deep flow of waters below the surface.
Trust, in its full maturity, is beautifully depicted by the following words of Paul. “For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.” (2 Timothy 1:12).
